In Excel you dont have to define whether a column is number date or text because Excel guesses the data type for you but of course it could be wrong in some cases.
In the Variable View however we need to specify various things for each variable which might not all immediately make sense. You can double click on the column heading shown with the arrow below for the first column. That permits you to enter information about the variable for that column.
